Happy Friday and welcome to another day of sharing. Last week, Sean’s brother was questioning as to his uncontrolled change, so continuing on from that: From Instinct–A Holloway pack Prequel (told from Sean Holloway’s PoV):

His glare remained fixed on me. “You shall not leave this house on the full moon again. Is that understood?”

I nodded, dipping my head to the expected depth out of respect.

His attention followed me across the grass and through the door. past the stares of the others, I did not stop until I had mounted the stairs to my bedroom and closed the door. With little else to destruct, I took my already torn clothing and shredded it further, lips clamped against the cries of anguish I so wished to give.

Another lie had been told.

Oh, poor Sean. Things don’t seem to be going so swimmingly, all of a sudden, eh?

I hope you enjoyed the taste. Until next week ….

As I have said before, any and all are welcome to join me in this weekly shenanigan. HOWEVER, if you do so, I URGE you to keep the shared snippets short and sweet. Mine will be a maximum of EIGHT (8) sentences. To help identification of these posts, I shall be hastagging them (for Twitter purposes) as #FVF. Feel free to knick said hashtag for your own Freeview Friday posts.

When good friend and pirate obsessive Rebecca Hart recently signed for her novel, Call of the Sea, I was very happy for her. With published short works under her belt, Call of the Sea was Rebecca’s first novel submission, and will be her first unshared publication, due to release June 21st 2012. So I was only too happy to participate in her cover reveal.

And as you’re not here to listen to my waffle (for a change), I’ll move right on … I give you Call of the Sea by Rebecca Hart:

Aaaaaaaaand the blurb:

There’s no denying the call of the sea.

Elysandra Winters has always yearned for a life of adventure on the rolling seas and is willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill her dream. When her Privateer father continually refuses to allow his only daughter to sail, Ellie defies him, disguises herself as a boy, and goes in search of a captain who will give her a chance to prove her worth.

Thanks to the cursed selkie blood coursing through his veins, Daniel O’Rourke needs the sea to survive. After giving up on his humanity and spending three years in seal form, he decides to give his human side another chance. Daniel goes in search of a job and a sense of normalcy, earning himself a position aboard Captain Winter’s ship, The Surf Runner. However, his new captain’s first assignment has nothing at all to do with sailing, and everything to do with his headstrong young daughter.

Years later, when the leader of a band of bloodthirsty pirates murders Captain Winters, Daniel and Elysandra’s lives come crashing back together with the force of a hurricane. Both experts in deception, they must find a way to trust each other if they are to have any hope of hunting down the captain’s killer.

So … what do you think, guys? It’s pretty cool, no?

Clicking on the image above will take you to the novel’s Goodreads page, as will clicking HERE! Feel free to add it to your to-read list.

And if you’d like to find out more about Rebecca, or are looking for someone new to stalk, she can be found at the following places:

Yep, yep, in case you hadn’t figured it out, this month’s (late posted) series in the spotlight is:

CHICAGOLAND VAMPIRES BY CHLOE NEILL!

So … my thoughts on this one, then? If I recall, I only read the first in the series because it was book of the month in one of my Goodreads groups and I do hate to stand aside when I could be participating. And whilst the series opener did have its issues, it was still a fun and light-hearted read with characters that caught my attention. Although, to be honest, had the successive books continued on at the same pace, with constant teasing of the sexual kind (the poor mc must have been about pulling her hair out), and if the main character hadn’t shown the development she had, I do wonder if I might have grown tired of the series before I reached where I have.

Please note: this series is not yet complete. There are more books to come. But here are my thoughts on each title so far:

Some Girls Bite. Meet Merit. The poor girl has just become a vampire through no choice of her own. In a setting where vampires are out in the public eye, Merit faces the struggles of her new … well, almost a new identity as she is suddenly seen differently—sometimes treated differently—by those around her. so much happens in this book, it’s almost impossible to describe it without a tonne of spoilers. Just know there’re not one but two hot male vampires who you keep hoping something will happen with (not together, of course), there’s an adorable shifter who you almost hope Merit will at least have a snog with, and there is a conspiracy afoot that (you’ve guessed it) newly turned vampire Merit manages to get to the bottom to—mostly because of her appointed role since becoming vampire. Yes, there is definite contriteness happening. Ignore it. Forget about it. Just read for enjoyments sake.

Friday Night Bites. At a guess, I’d have said this book was the authors first attempt at a second in a series, and she struggled with balancing the back-story with moving the current plot along. The beginning was a bit of a drag to get through. Due to the poorly-weaved recap of the previous novel, the pacing was screwy. However, once you get passed that, the story really kicks off and I flew through the rest of the tale with as much ease—if not more—than Some Girls Bite. Warning though: this book is left on a cliffhanger.

Twice Bitten. As so often happens with series, book three was where the author seemed to hit her stride. Redemption mixed with shifters galore, mystery, cuteness, decent plot, great pacing, and way cleaner writing. At this point? I was hooked.

Hard Bitten. Some of you may recall my series review for Georgina Kincaid where I reached the end of book three and was so much in shock I felt depressed. That’s pretty much exactly what happened to me with Hard Bitten. Throughout the last couple of books, around the plot, the author gives the reader exactly what they’re craving. Then at the end? Right at the very end? She blasted-well steals it all away again. I blarted like a newborn when the crap hit my emotional fan. And yet again, I found myself FURIOUS with an author. Whilst at the same time, respecting their balls.

Drink Deep. I RARELY rush straight out and buy a book just because I want it. in fact, I think I’ve only ever pre-ordered a book—or ordered on the day of release—twice in my life. However, after the abovementioned ending Hard Bitten left me at, even if my hands had been cuffed, I’d have figured out how to order Drink Deep using my damn nose to press the keys if I’d had to. No way on earth could I not have read on. Now … how to explain this one without major spoilers for the cliffhanger at the end of book 4? Hmmm. The ‘thing’ that is stolen away from the reader in the last book is now (obviously) missing in here. The gaping hole that the reader is left with also affects the characters of the book, and along with it the story. The tone is ‘low’ to reflect that, and one can’t help wonder if they’ll manage to tolerate an entire book where most of the cast appears depressed. In fact, the clanger at the end of book 4 had such an impact that around the first ¾ of this book simply felt … wrong. Until we get to the end. Ignore the fact that the foreshadowing wasn’t well enough cloaked for my liking, and head straight to the ending when we are hit with such a WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! moment that I was left wondering how on earth the author expects she can get away with this. To the point that the joy I should have felt over what occurred was somewhat fogged by the confusion and frustration over the matter. I can only hope the author knows what she’s doing. This HUGE turn of events is either going to fall flat on its face and trash the series or its going to turn into something spectacular. However, I’ve come to trust the author (for the story-weaving abilities—NOT for delivering because she is The. Meanest. Author. To her readers Ever!), so I shall be placing my trust in her to lead me to greatness and am awaiting the release of Biting Cold like an eager beaver.

(As usual, all book title links lead directly to my reviews of each title)

So … if you can deal with a slowish start whilst the character finds her voice, if you love a little female-kick-assery and hot males, and if you don’t mind your emotions pogo-sticking around with some real wtf moments, then maybe you should give this one a try. My rating:

I’m new to this game. Apparently, it’s been running around, taking over people’s blogs, but this is my first inclusion, thanks to the delightful (friend and fellow writer) Jen over at The Dreamweaver’s Cottage.The idea is to answer the sender’s 11 questions, then come up with your own 11 questions and pass them along to 11 bloggers. They in turn answer your questions and link back to your site when done. Fun, I know, right?

So here are Jen’s questions to me:

1. What is your favorite board game?

I hate board games. Often refer to them as bored games. But if forced to pick one … I’d probably say … Harry Potter Scene It.

2. If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?

My bad money management years ago before I wizened up to the fact that everything has to be paid for eventually.

3. The world is going to end in 24 hours. How do you spend your last day on earth?

In the kitchen, with Mr B & the Mini-Me’s, eating all of our favourite crap and having a food fight that requires us to then go mess up a bathroom no one will have to worry about cleaning.

4. Would you stay with the one who loves you or go back to the one you love? (and no, they aren’t the same people)

Hell, I’d move both dudes in together and tell the pair of them to put up with it.

5. Who is your favorite literary villain? Why?

Jaz from Personal Demon. He might have been the bad guy, but he couldn’t help himself—it was all down to his sick and twistedness. The cutie had such an awesome personality complete with vulnerability that made you want to fall in love with him and totally suckered you in—the you tell yourself not to be so harsh when the suspicions kick in.

6. If you could fly, what creature of flight would you be?

I have flown in my dreams. And I always fly as myself. but if I had to fly ‘as’ something ‘other’, then I’d say angel.

7. You’ve won a prestigious award for your novel. The award ceremony is the same night and same time as your child’s high school graduation ceremony. Which one do you go to?

Meh, I’m known to avoid the spotlight at all costs, so it’s an easy choice of the grad ceremony.

8. You’ve been abducted by a literary guild of intergalactic aliens. The only way you can go home is if you write a logline about your life. What is your logline?

If only J.A. could have figured it all out sooner; thankfully, it’s never too late until you refuse to allow yourself to try.

(Pretty crap, eh? There’s a reason my publisher doesn’t let me write my own blurbs any more)

9. Favorite book as a child? As an adult?

I recall devouring every Famous Five novel by Enid Blyton, as well as every Amelia Jane story. So it might be safe to say she was my favourite author until I discovered Judy Blume. However, the book that has always stayed with me from the youngest age was one called Teeny Tiny and the Witch. I dog-eared the poor article, I read it so much.

As an adult … cripes. Seriously, no idea … at the moment, I think it might be Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout. It might be YA but I’ve recently finished it and it pretty much blew me away.

10. You’ve been told your book is going to be made into a movie? What’s the first thing you do?

A fish impersonation … then SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAM!

11. What is your happiest memory?

Reuniting with Mr B when I was 17 after losing touch for 18 months.

And here are my forwarding 11 questions:

1. You’re stranded on a snowy mountain after the aircraft transporting you to [wherever the heck you like] makes a crash landing. Out of the 6 passengers and 2 pilots, only 2 have survived. You … and some dude who looks shockingly like your number 1 book boyfriend. But … you’ve now been stranded for close to 89 hours, and the closest you’ve seen to a food source is staring right back at you. So … which part of him do you plant o eat first?

2. So … you have an evening of glitz and glamour ahead. But being the super secret spy you are, you already foresee the night ending in a run for your life (or to protect your anonymity). Which means the all important decision of footwear becomes a little complicated. Do you go for your favourite pair of freakishly awesome Jimmy Choos and hope you don’t end up on a cobblestone street? Or do you say to heck with it, and wear a skirt long enough to cover your battered Nikes?

3. If a global law was instated that each and every citizen of every country could only ever eat ONE type of cake for the duration of their lives and they each had to sign a contract binding them to their decision, what cake would you choose as your ‘can’t live without’?

4. If you could choose ANY book (no matter how impossible the graphics required might seem) to be made into a film (movie for the U.S.ers), what book would you choose?

5. Okay, seeing as I brought it up above in the stranded question I have to know: who’s your No 1 (ONLY1!) book boyfriend? The. Ultimate. Fictional Male. Of your dreams!?

6. And still with the book boyfriend, we’ll presume you didn’t eat all of him before the two of you were rescued, and he’s a forgiving kind of guy. So now he’s agreed to a date that doesn’t have him on the menu (at least not as the starter, anyway, if you get my gist). What’s the date? Where, what, why, how?

7. The government are clamping down on the atrocity otherwise known as social networking. Every social networker is permitted only one platform. So … which one can’t you live without? Choose your poison.

8. The hot girl always used to pick on you at school. She had all the boys flocking round her. All the cool kids following behind like sniffer dogs after crack (no pun intended … honestly). And some years have passed since you walked out of those school gates for the last time and thanked the heavens you’d never have to deal with her again. But then you walk into your local burger bar … and get served … by Miss Popular. Except she most certainly ain’t looking quite so pretty any more. To add to that, the server next to her is asking how she got on with finding a baby sitter for her rambunctious triplets. Tell me: is she worth your scorn? Or can you not resist the impulse to wallow in your better life?

9. Okay, an easier one for you as I’ve been pretty hard: what is your EARLIEST childhood memory? Is it even from this lifetime?

Happy Friday and welcome to another day of snippet sharing. If you recall last week showed us that Jem’s mother witnessed Sean’s change brought on my wolfsbane. Well, now he’s returned home and–oddly enough–Sean’s tattered clothing gives the game away to his brother that something has happened. From my newly released novella Instinct–A Holloway pack Prequel (told from Sean Holloway’s PoV):

Placing his nose to my throat, he sniffed.

I stiffened. If her were to smell Jem upon me, there would be trouble—for her and for me.

“You changed.” He sniffed again, beneath my jaw, across my shoulder, before pulling back to look at me. “Why?”

Only a witch would know of the properties of wolfsbane, just as only a witch could know to plant them when wolves were near. Jem’s mother must have known of our existence, and that should have been the point when I informed my brother of my knowledge.

Anyone else have that song in their head: There may be trouble ahead … ?

I hope you enjoyed the taste. Until next week ….

As I have said before, any and all are welcome to join me in this weekly shenanigan. HOWEVER, if you do so, I URGE you to keep the shared snippets short and sweet. Mine will be a maximum of EIGHT (8) sentences. To help identification of these posts, I shall be hastagging them (for Twitter purposes) as #FVF. Feel free to knick said hashtag for your own Freeview Friday posts.

He’s hot,

helps girls when lost,

and they call him Mr Frost.

He’s also dark and yum

and he has a lovely bum …

(or so I’ve heard *cough*).

Yes, my guest for the day is Touch of Frost’s: Willem.

W: *scratches hair and looks for a hole to crawl into*

J: *Turns to the dark haired hunk sitting opposite whilst eyeing the rather large puss at his feet* Hi, Willem. *smile* Thanks for coming.

W: Yeah, hi Julie. Thanks for having me here … where’d you say we are? Don’t get out much. *pats Calla while she whines*

J: The UK, Will. Don’t worry, we’ll have you home soon. If it’s okay with you, I’d quite like to give your readers a chance to understand you even deeper than they already might do. To discover the Willem beneath the surface. The guy behind the scenes. You game?

W: *jacks up a brow* Ah, yeah, I guess. Not much more to know other than what you see, though, but ask away.

J: Thanks. It’s clear from reading Touch of Frost that you’ve had quite a ‘thing’ for Lauren since she was pretty young (even though you waited until much later to break all the rules—mucho romantic by the way). How about you explain how that works to anyone visiting today. Is it some kind of imprinting or connection of soul mates deal? What was it exactly that drew you to her on so deep a level?

W: *grins* She is quite a spark plug, that one. There’s no magic between us, I just found an old soul alive in a beautiful woman and she drew me in no matter how hard I tried to stop myself. You see, most folks hate the snow, go around complaining about the cold and the wet. Not her. She sees it as natural art, to be admired and as something to play in. *shakes head* Most city folk don’t know how to play anymore, and don’t stop long enough to admire the amazing world around them. That’s what made me want to know her, because she found her true self on the mountainside even though she didn’t realize it for a while.

J: Saving humans: did you do that for fun (just in case anyone’s wondering if they’d have a chance with a weather mage by tossing themselves into danger, like Lauren did to get your attention)? Or was it only your yen for Lauren that had you constantly protecting her wellbeing?

W: *chuckles* Awkward. Yeah, that’s just Lauren. I couldn’t imagine a world without her in it, so despite breaking the first law of my people, I made sure she was always safe in the place she loved. I’d do it over again in a heartbeat, too.

J: I’m intrigued by the whole weather mage deal. But what I’m even more intrigued about is where you seemingly disappeared to when you weren’t not around. Were you still there but invisible? Or did you have a private hideaway you waltzed away to? Care to give any details about what ‘home’ was like?

W: Well, I can’t tell you much because they might just come back down here and snatch me away, but I’ll tell you what I can. *shivers* The mages and elementals are born in another realm not unlike your earth, though it’s quite a bit smaller. Most of us live within our element, water within the oceans, air upon the clouds, fire in the flaming pits of Coramine. I was born at Winter Haven, where the temperature doesn’t make it above -30 or so. Still have a few brothers left there who don’t have the gifts I do, so they’ll always live there. When those of us who have gifts come of age, we’re abandoned on earth to find our animal guide. *Pats Calla as she yowls proud cat sounds at him* Animals are pretty good judges of character, and if we can’t convince one of them to become our permanent link to the upper realm, we remain on earth and our powers are taken away.

J: And how did that whole business with the cabin work? When you were gone it looked rotten. When you returned: spanking. Was this a magical connection between yourself and an earthly place you were grounded to? Did you have to magically transform it yourself, or was in a (super)natural occurrence you played no conscious part in?

W: That was magic. I found the old place and spruced it up just enough to live in, but still let me feel like I was living close to the elements. I could hear my winds howl and the snow patting against the tin roof. Calla really likes it too, don’t you girl? *She bunts his hand and meows again*

J: Do you miss any of that magic—now you’ve chosen Lauren over the only existence you’ve ever known? I guess what I’m really asking is: any regrets?

W: I do miss my brothers, but I know they understand I’m happy now, so it’s all good. All I’ve wanted for the last ten years is to be near Lauren, to listen to her voice, to watch her when she gets all fascinated with something simple like the sunrise. *shrugs* Besides, another mage took my place, and she keeps us in lots of snow. To see Lauren twirling around outside her cabin staring up at the falling flakes makes me one happy guy.

J: Cute. And let’s not forget everything’s changed for Calla, too. *scratches big, intimidating puss on the head* You think Calla’ll stick around for the life-of-less excitement? Cats are pretty territorial—maybe lynx’s are, too—so how do you think she’ll deal with having to share her saviour and best friend with a woman?

W: *holds belly while he laughs* Well, considering I have to fight the old girl for my place in the bed every night when Lauren’s all curled up around her, I’d say she’s adjusting just fine. She never really liked the other realm, so I’m sure she won’t miss it there. This mountain always has been, and always will be, her home. She loves Lauren just as much as I do—in fact, the two always gang up on me outside. *nudges Calla and grins at her* One of these days Lauren and I are going to have a fair snowball fight without you flattening me, you hear?

J: *Sigh* Looks like the ladies don’t really stand a chance with you then, eh?

W: *gives an awkward chuckle and edges away* Nope. My heart’s long gone, wrapped around Lauren until forever.

J: Oh, well. Thanks anyway for visiting today. It’s been an absolute pleasure to have you here on my blog.

W: Been a real pleasure talking to you, too, Julie. You need to come across that big blue and visit us some time.

J: Be careful of the invites you dish out, Will. You might just end up with a visitor. *wink*

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope you all enjoyed the interview. For those of you intrigued enough to want to know more, here’s the cover (image is linked to its Goodreads page) and blurb:
(From Goodreads …)
Even the simplest of touches between Will Frost and Lauren McLean are forbidden.
To share love will surely mean death.
Since her granddad’s passing, Lauren has existed a few steps out of sync with the world. Desperate to feel the love only he offered her as a child, Lauren returns to the haven they once shared — a snow-covered cabin at the foothills of the Rockies.
It’s not the memory of her granddad that warms her ice-cold, frost-bitten body after being caught in a blizzard, though. It’s the man in whose bed she wakes.
Along with bringing life to her soul, Will stirs deep-rooted memories in Lauren and brings out the love she seeks.
What Will knows about himself — the secrets of his kind — he keeps hidden, forcing Lauren to search for answers, to question and ultimately put her life, and his own existence, in danger.
In love though, there is always a way.
Can Will get around the rules? Or will Lauren give up her life simply to have one last touch from Will Frost?
Sounds pretty cool, right? (pun intended) Well, I happen to know that it is, so you should deffo be adding it to your to-read list.
Heheheh, y’all may remember that I ran a contest a few weeks back. A search for my biggest fan, as hosted by Mr B. Well, I am so muchero (*giggle*) happy that I can now announce the winner.
Because the First. Ever. Holloway Pack T-shirt headed off to The Netherlands to visit a local windmill and here’s the proof, with winner, Renée Vossen
Hehehehe, cool, no?
Thanks so much to Renée (and the other entrees) for participating. And a huge thanks for the pic.
Happy Friday and welcome to another day of snippet sharing. If you recall we saw Sean’s uncontrolled change last week. This week’s continues on after he’s taken a few moments to recover as wolf. From my newly released novella Instinct–A Holloway pack Prequel (told from Sean Holloway’s PoV):
The responsibility to ensure there were no witnesses fell on each of our shoulders, as did the task of dealing with any such observers.
My paws made little sound as I padded to the forest edge. When I peered out across the opening, I froze. My horror came out as a small whimper.
Beside the third oak, staring straight back at me, stood Jem’s mother.
I growled without intention, but she appeared undisturbed by the threat.
Eyes hard and cold, she held her head high before spinning to walk away.
Uh-oh! Does anyone else get the impression there may be more to Jem’s mother than meets the eye?
I hope you enjoyed the taste. Until next week ….
As I have said before, any and all are welcome to join me in this weekly shenanigan. HOWEVER, if you do so, I URGE you to keep the shared snippets short and sweet. Mine will be a maximum of EIGHT (8) sentences. To help identification of these posts, I shall be hastagging them (for Twitter purposes) as #FVF. Feel free to knick said hashtag for your own Freeview Friday posts.
Roll up, roll up, and welcome to another awesome bloghop giveaway!
This one has been organised by I am a Reader, Not a Writer & Rachael Renee Anderson. So a HUGE thanks to them. As usual, clicking on the image will take you to where you’ll find an entire list of blogs hosting giveaways for this event. Be sure to check them out.
Okay, moving on …
As Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and I LOVE Valentine’s Day … and because in only four days, I will have been married for 17 years, I’m in a loving kind of mood, which puts me in a giving kind of mood.
So … because of that, I shall be altering up how I do this giveaway. This time there’ll be three prizes: three winners—one prize each.
Make sense?
And here’s what’s up for grabs. Three lucky winners will each win ONE of these E-Books:
Jem Stonehouse, a housewife with a neurotic husband bent on keeping her in line, dreams about werewolves in, what she believes, is a bid to escape boredom.
Sean Holloway is a werewolf, living a charade within the human race, whose mind drifts to a bond he shares with a woman he hasn’t met–at least, not in this lifetime.
Apart, the two are safe but live unfulfilled lives.
Together, they’ll become prey to rival packs just as they have been for hundreds of years.
When their worlds collide, and not for the first time, instinct takes over. Dreams become reality. Futures are uncertain. To keep history from repeating itself, Sean must teach Jem about his heritage, convince her of her role, and win her love.
Can Jem accept her destiny before it’s too late, or is her inner wolf buried too deep to save her future with Sean?
Darkness & Light (A Holloway Pack Story, 1)
Werewolf Sean Holloway treats the village marketplace like a sexual buffet, though his charm does little to win over his latest entrée of choice. Whether because of Jem Stonehouse’s unique scent, her headstrong nonchalance, or the fact he is forbidden to see her by his pack’s rules, Sean wants her.
When Jem is nothing but flippant toward his advances, he pursues her with vigour, stealing moments alone with her without a libido-driven agenda.
The new and heady experience for him drives their relationship beyond romantic interest, and straight toward love.
That is, until Jem learns the truth about Sean’s heritage. Knowledge of the existence of werewolves leads to only one outcome: death.
In this prequel to Darkness & Light, we are taken back in time, to the very beginning of Jem and Sean’s love-across-the-centuries relationship.
Did it end there? Or did Sean defy his own pack to save the woman he loves?
Instinct (A Holloway Pack Story, 0)
Three men never expected love to wreak so much havoc in their lives.
In Marked, Darkness & Light’s Sean Holloway is on a mission—to find the perfect gift for the woman of his dreams. When all conventional choices turn out to be the wrong ones, each failed attempt convinces Sean his self-imposed task is impossible. But in the world of the Holloway Pack, anything is possible if it can be kept a secret.
In Misguided, Little White Lies’s Wyatt Moreland is hot on the trail of a wanted man when a rumor about his fiancée halts his progress. His desire to keep her safe wars with her need to be involved in his work and could derail their entire wedding unless he finds out the truth before she does.
In Tempted, The Glass Man’s Liam Kane made a promise to the fae he loves never to use his power to harm others. When a horrific event angers him, the energy boiling inside seduces him into walking a dark path. He has but one choice: resist his own nature or give up the one he loves.
Will the three men make the right choices? Or will their actions destroy their futures with the women they love?
